Identifying the implicit, unstated belief that must be true for a statement to make sense.

How to Identify a Valid Assumption

  • Ask: "Is this directly stated?" — if yes, it's a fact, NOT an assumption
  • Ask: "Does the statement only make sense if this is true?" — if yes, it's likely the assumption
  • Reject assumptions that are too broad or introduce unrelated new information
💡 Example: Notice: "Please switch off lights when leaving." Assumption: people currently leave lights on — implicit, but necessary for the notice to make sense.
