Introduction
Alphabet Series questions test how well you know each letter's position in the alphabet (A=1 through Z=26) and
its relationships — opposite letters, letters a fixed distance apart, and reverse-order positions.
The EJOTY Trick
Memorise these five anchor letters and their positions: E=5, J=10, O=15, T=20, Y=25.
Any other letter's position can be found quickly by counting a few steps from the nearest anchor instead of
counting from A every time.
Opposite Letter Rule
Opposite letter position = 27 − (given letter's position). Example: opposite of D (4th letter) = 27−4 = 23rd
letter = W. This models how letters pair up when the alphabet is folded in half (A↔Z, B↔Y, C↔X...).
Q. What is the position of the letter "R" in the alphabet?
Using EJOTY, O=15. R is 3 letters after O → 15+3 = 18th position.
Q. If the letters of the word "STRONG" are arranged in alphabetical order, which letter is 3rd from the left?
Letters: S, T, R, O, N, G. Alphabetical order: G, N, O, R, S, T. 3rd from left = O.
Q. Find the letter that is exactly midway between K and S in the alphabet.
K = 11th, S = 19th. Midpoint position = (11+19)/2 = 15 → using EJOTY, O = 15th letter.
Answer: O.
⚠️ Key Insight: Always double check whether a question wants position "from the beginning" (A=1)
or "from the end" (Z=1) — reverse-position questions are a frequent trap in this chapter.
