Introduction

Software is the set of instructions (programs) that tell hardware what to do. Unlike hardware, software cannot be physically touched — it exists as code. This chapter covers the two broad software categories and their licensing models.

System Software vs Application Software

CategoryFunctionExamples
System SoftwareManages and controls computer hardware, provides a platform for other software to runOperating System, Device Drivers, Utility programs
Application SoftwarePerforms specific tasks for the end userMS Word, Photoshop, browsers, games

Types of System Software

TypeFunction
Operating SystemManages hardware resources and provides a user interface (detailed in Chapter 4)
Device DriversAllow the OS to communicate with specific hardware devices (printer driver, graphics driver)
Utility SoftwarePerforms maintenance tasks — antivirus, disk cleanup, file compression tools
Language TranslatorsConvert programming code into machine-executable form (compilers, interpreters — Chapter 10)

Types of Application Software

TypeExamples
Word ProcessingMS Word, Google Docs
SpreadsheetMS Excel, Google Sheets
PresentationMS PowerPoint, Google Slides
Web BrowserChrome, Firefox, Edge
Graphics/MultimediaPhotoshop, CorelDRAW
DBMSMySQL, Oracle (Chapter 9)

Software Licensing Models

Flowchart — Software Licensing Categories
Freeware — free to use, no cost, but source code not shared
Shareware — free trial period, payment required to continue full use
Open Source — free, and source code is publicly available to view/modify
Proprietary/Commercial — paid, source code kept private by the company
License TypeExample
FreewareAdobe Acrobat Reader, Skype
SharewareWinRAR (trial before purchase)
Open SourceLinux, Mozilla Firefox, LibreOffice
ProprietaryMicrosoft Windows, MS Office, Adobe Photoshop
📌 Key Distinction: "Free" in freeware refers to cost (no payment needed); "free" in open-source refers to freedom (source code access and modification rights) — these are NOT the same concept, a common exam trap.

Firmware

A special category of software permanently embedded into a hardware device (e.g., a computer's BIOS or a router's internal control software) — it sits between hardware and system software, rarely updated by end users directly.

UPSC/SSC Focus: System vs application software distinction · Types of system software (OS, drivers, utilities) · Freeware vs shareware vs open-source vs proprietary licensing · Firmware's unique embedded role.
