Fill in the Blanks & Cloze Test — SSC General English Notes Ch. 18

Introduction

Fill in the Blanks tests a single missing word (grammar or vocabulary) in one sentence; Cloze Test extends this to an entire passage with multiple blanks, where each answer must also fit the passage's overall theme and flow — not just the immediate sentence.

Single Fill-in-the-Blank — Two Question Types

Cloze Test — Core Strategy

Golden Rule for Cloze Tests

Read the ENTIRE passage once, ignoring the blanks, before attempting to fill in a single one

1	Read the whole passage first to understand the overall topic, tone, and narrative flow
2	Fill in the blanks you're most confident about first — this often provides context clues for the harder ones
3	Check that your chosen words maintain CONSISTENT tense and tone throughout the passage
4	Re-read the completed passage once at the end to confirm it flows logically

⚠️ Common Trap: Never fill in a cloze blank by only reading the sentence containing it — a word can be grammatically valid in isolation but wrong for the passage's established tense or tone (e.g., filling a blank with present tense in an otherwise past-tense narrative).

Q. Passage snippet: "Rina always (1)___ to school early. Yesterday, she (2)___ up late and (3)___ to run all the way." Fill blank (1), given the passage is written in a habitual-past-tense narrative style.

Since blank (2) and (3) reference "yesterday" (past simple: woke up, had), and blank (1) describes her HABITUAL past routine ("always"), it should use past simple too: went (not "goes," which would clash with the passage's established past-tense narration)

Common Cloze Test Blank Categories
