Ranking and Order

Determining relative position in a line or list — total-count and both-side ranking formulas illustrated on a simple position diagram.

Introduction

Ranking and Order questions ask you to find someone's position in a line, row, or list — usually given their rank from one end, and requiring a quick conversion formula to find the total count or their rank from the other end.

P is 4th from the left and also 4th from the right in this row of 7 → Total = (4+4)−1 = 7.

Core Formula

Formula
Total number of people = (Rank from left + Rank from right) − 1
Rank from right = (Total + 1) − Rank from left
Q. In a row of students, Rahul is 12th from the left and 18th from the right. Find the total number of students.
Total = (12+18) − 1 = 29 students
Q. In a class of 40 students, Priya's rank from the top is 15th. Find her rank from the bottom.
Rank from bottom = (40+1) − 15 = 26th

"Rank Changes When Someone Is Added/Removed" Pattern

Q. In a row, Amit is 7th from the left and 9th from the right. If 3 more students are added to the right end of the row, what will be Amit's rank from the right?
Adding students to the right end doesn't change Amit's position relative to the left, but increases his rank-from-right count
New rank from right = 9 + 3 = 12th

Comparative Ranking (Using Clues, No Numbers)

Q. Among five friends, A is taller than B but shorter than C. D is taller than C but shorter than E. Who is the tallest?
Chain: B < A < C < D < E
Tallest = E
💡 Exam Tip: For comparative ranking questions (no exact numbers), always build a single ordered chain (e.g., B<A<C<D<E) from all the given clues before answering — trying to compare pairs individually without a full chain often leads to contradictions.
