Introduction

Word Swap questions give a sentence with two words appearing in the wrong positions — swapping them (and only them) restores grammatical and logical correctness. No words are added, removed, or changed in form.

Solving Approach

  • Read the sentence once fully — a word-swap error often makes the sentence sound clearly "off" or nonsensical.
  • Look for two words of the same part of speech (two nouns, two verbs, two adjectives) that seem to have exchanged places.
  • Mentally swap your suspected pair and re-read the sentence to confirm it now makes complete sense.
  • Verify that swapping doesn't just fix meaning but also keeps the sentence fully grammatical.
Q. Identify the two words to be swapped: "The manager asked the clerk to sign the file and staple the letter before sending it."
(Sentence as given is scrambled: "The manager asked the clerk to staple the file and sign the letter before sending it.")
Logically, one "signs" a letter/document and "staples" pages of a file together — the original scrambled sentence has these actions reversed. Swapping "staple" and "sign" restores logical sense: "...to sign the file and staple the letter..." is nonsensical too — the natural correct version is "sign the letter and staple the file", so the words to swap are "staple" and "sign".
⚠️ Key Insight: The two swapped words are always the same part of speech (both nouns, both verbs) — this narrows your search significantly instead of testing every word pair in the sentence.
Practice Focus: Spotting logically reversed action-object pairs · Confirming both grammar and meaning after a mental swap · Narrowing search using part-of-speech matching.
